Create a beautiful sidewalk garden in 6 simple steps!…
Laying the groundwork
To do this, decide how wide you would like your garden to be on each side. (I used 18 inches on each side for mine) In order to create a straight edge and equal width throughout, you need some string and two sticks that you can insert into the yard. Tie the string to the first stick that you will be using. Start at one end of your sidewalk and insert the stick with the string tied to it at the width that you have measured out. Then move to the other end of the sidewalk. On this end, measure out your desired width again and place the stick in the yard to mark your place. Pull the string from the top of the sidewalk down to the stick that you placed at the end of the sidewalk. Be sure to pull the sting nice and tight in order to create a nice straight line.
Marking your boundaries
Now you have created a nice straight line with your string. With this next step, you will need spray paint. Take spray paint and spray all along the string from the top of the sidewalk to the bottom (creating a nice straight, designated line for digging). After you are done spraying out the line, you can remove the sticks and strings and repeat the steps on the other side of the sidewalk.
Now that you have created the outline for your project, you can start to dig out the grass. It’s easiest to dig out the edges first, and then the grass will roll up nicely.
Lay down your soil
Once you have the grass removed from both sides, lay down your top soil.
Now to the fun part! Plant some beautiful flowers of your choice. I intermixed daylilies with some daisies. That way, the perennials (daylilies) will return for the years to come, and then each year I can add in my own favorite annuals.
This step is optional, but I think it add a nice touch to your sidewalk garden. I used 12 solar lights that I purchased at Home Depot. I spaced them out evenly along the sidewalk in between the flowers. This looks beautiful at night as it lights up the garden. Talk about some great curb appeal! 🙂
