The room that this headboard was going into was a black, red, and white fashion-themed room. For that reason, I decided to use cut outs from my favorite fashion magazines and black and white polka dotted napkins to create a beautiful collage. If you are new to decoupaging, and you want a step-by-step tutorial, check out this post. It will give you the whole run down of how to create the perfect decoupaged piece.
Napkins, Magazines, or Decorative Paper
I first painted the headboard with a charcoal gray chalk paint, just to give it a uniform dark base. Chalk paint is great because there is no sanding required and the application is very easy. You can now find chalk paint in the paint sections of your local Lowe’s and Home Depot.
Then I used the polka dotted napkins to create a nice decorated outline along the headboard. After cutting out some of the images that I wanted to use from the magazines, I started to mod podge them on in a collage-like fashion. However, before you stick anything down, I would suggest mapping out your design to get an idea of where each image should go.
Mod Podge is super easy to work with and it gives you great results! You can use any type of decorated paper material when you are decoupaging furniture. It is a fun and easy way to customize any piece of furniture in your home.
