Have you ever seen old hubcaps along the side of the road? If so, don’t just pass them by! Hubcaps can be made into the most adorable DIY garden art and I will show you how.
If you are an artist or just love to paint, then you will love these decorated hubcaps. All it takes is a little bit of imagination, and your hubcap can be repurposed into a beautiful piece of art. So grab your paint and lets get started!…
The first thing that you will need is a hubcap.
Now that I have these decorated hubcaps, I am realizing more and more how easy it is to find old hubcaps laying along the side of the road. The greatest part about this project is that the main piece (the hubcap) is typically free! So the next time you are driving and see an old hubcap laying along the side of road, pick it up and give this project a try. 🙂
Second, you will need some paint.
My aunt is a pro when it comes to painting these hubcaps, and she has found that acrylic paint works beautifully on these pieces. The acrylic paint works especially well for the fine detail. However, you can also use spray paint if you want to spray the entire hubcap first, in order to establish a base color. If there are some hard to reach spots, you can use a permanent marker to fill them in.
Once you are all done painting your design and your hubcap is dry, finish it off with a lacquer or protective topcoat…
This triple thick glaze can be found at Lowe’s. This coats the finished product with a clear protective layer and provides it with a shiny glass-like finish.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating hubcaps. You can attach them to a post, so they they stick into the ground and look like a flower. Your can hang wind chimes or other decorative pieces off of them. You have the ability to customize them to your liking. It is a really easy and fun way to add some color and decoration to your yard. Here are some examples of some finished products, and hopefully these will give you some ideas…
Let me know how your repurposed hubcap turns out!
