If you love DIY projects, then you will love this DIY bedroom furniture makeover. When I moved into my house last Fall, I was starting from scratch with all of the large furniture pieces. This was the first time I had moved into a house of my own, where I needed to furnish every single room. As you probably already know, buying furniture can be a very pricey task. In order to save some money, I decided to put my thrifty, creative ideas to use.
Finding the Furniture
All the furniture pieces that I used in this post were either from GoodWill or free, (someone was giving the dressers away) which saved me unbelievable amounts of money. However, not only was this project great due to the savings, but it also allowed to me customize the furniture to perfectly match my mint green and coral beach themed bedroom.
DIY Bedroom Dresser Makeover
The first piece that I want to show you is my dresser. Here is a before picture of the dresser…
So as you can see, this dresser did not start out looking very pretty. However, I love the way it turned out after a little sanding and paint work. If you have never sanded or painted furniture before, check out this post for a step-by-step tutorial.
Sanding & Painting
After sanding down the entire dresser, I painted the outside white and the drawers a mint green. I used a small roller to apply the paint, and a brush to get into some of the small, hard to reach areas. (FYI: I used latex interior satin paint for all of these pieces of furniture)
I found the most adorable sea horse and beach themed hardware at HomeGoods. The seahorses actually came in a brown color, but I spray painted them coral just to add a little bit more color to this piece.
DIY Nightstand Makeover
The second piece that I want to show you is my nightstand. I found this nightstand set at GoodWill for twenty five dollars! What a steal, right? Here is a before picture of these two pieces…
Sanding & Painting
So same as dressers, I sanded both of these nightstands down in order to get them ready to be painted. I used a color washing method on these in order to give them a beachy vibe. Some of you may have heard of “white washing” furniture, but I basically did the opposite of that. I started by painting the entire piece of furniture white in order to give it a nice solid white based color. Then, I took a coral paint mixed with water, and color washed the entire piece.
How To Color Wash:
- Pour some of your colored paint into a small cup or tray
- Add a small amount of water to the paint (Add just enough water to thin out the paint so that it can be easily wiped off of the furniture)
- Mix the water and paint together with your brush
- Start in small sections, and apply the water-paint mixture
- Immediateley after applying the mixture, wipe it off with cheese cloth
- Continue to use this method on small sections all over the furniture until you have totally covered it
This method gives your furniture a nice tint of color with some added texture. It makes for beautiful furniture makeovers, especially if you are going for a beach theme or vintage look. The best part about this method is that you can’t really mess it up. Just keep slapping on the paint and then wiping it off. It makes the furniture look perfectly imperfect.
Do you have some old furniture that you want to update? I hope you give this method a try and achieve beautiful results!
