Here are some simple ways to keep your hair healthy, beautiful and strong. If you are anything like me and you heat style or color your hair, then these tips are definitely something you should take into consideration. The greatest investment you can make is in yourself, and that includes your hair. A little hair TLC can go a long way.

Invest in a good shampoo
A high quality shampoo can make all the difference in the way your hair looks and feels. Cheap shampoos are known to strip and dry your hair out, causing damage and breakage. If you have not already, try switching to shampoo that is sulfate-free and color safe. Two of my favorite shampoos are Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Shampoo and IGK’s Hot Girls Hydrating Shampoo.
Use only a detangling brush on wet hair
Your hair is in it most vulnerable state when it is wet. That is why it is so important to use the right type of brush on your wet hair. This will prevent your hair from splitting and breaking off as your comb through when it is wet. I recommend trying a detangling brush like the Wet n Dry Brush by Cala or The Wet Brush.
Once I have detangled my hair and brushed my products through my wet hair, I like to use the Verb Vented Brush to dry it. This brush is also very gentle on the hair and it works wonders to speed up my drying time (which means less heat on my hair).
Prime your hair before you apply any heat
It is very important to prime your hair with a good heat protectant product prior to styling. Some of my favorite products in this category include: Alterna’s Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray, Dry Bar’s Hot Toddy Heat & UV Protectant, & Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer.
Deep Condition your hair once a week
Using a hair mask once a week made a huge difference in the health of my hair. I saw less breakage, less split ends, and my hair looks healthier, stronger and shinier. Some of my favorite hair mask and deep conditioning treatments include: Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask & Amika’s Nourishing Mask.
Another product that I really love is Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Night Cap Overnight Perfector. You put this in your hair before bed and it works on your hair as you sleep. The best part about it is that you don’t even have to wash it out in the morning. My hair always looks great when I use this product for bed.
Invest in a good hair oil
When it comes to achieving healthy ends and beautiful shiny hair, hair oil is your secret weapon. You can use a hair oil treatment on damp hair before styling or use a little on your dry hair to add some shine and frizz protection. Some of my favorite hair oils include: Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, Surface’s Bassu Oil, and Verb’s Ghost Oil.
Wash your hair less frequently
I know this may sound gross to those of you who feel the need to wash your hair on a daily basis, but it really is so much better for your hair if you only wash it every other or every 3rd day. Washing your hair on a daily basis strips your hair of its natural oils. This may be why your hair is feeling dry and dull. It may take some transition time for hair to get used to not being washed every day, but if you invest in a good dry shampoo for the days that you are not washing, you will be perfectly fine.
However, if you feel like you just can’t handle not washing your hair on a daily basis then I highly recommend trying a co-wash type of shampoo like Unwash Bio-Cleansing Conditioner. You can use this wash regularly without worrying about stripping your hair or drying it out.
